The light, lives and textures of the contemporary working class Mumbai are explored and celebrated by writer/director Payal Kapadia, who won the Grand Prix at this year’s Cannes Festival for his revealing fiction debut. Focusing on two roommates who also work together at a city chief nurse, Pabha (Kani Kusruti), and recent hiring Anu (Divya Pabha)-In addition to his co-worker, Cook Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam), the movie Kapadia lights the moments of connection and hurt, hope and disappointment. Pabha, her husband from a arranged marriage who lives in distant Germany, is courted by a doctor in his hospital; Anu continues in a romance with a Muslim man, who must keep secret from his strict Hindu family; Parvaty finds herself dealing with a sudden eviction of her apartment. Kapadia captures the agitation of the metropolis and the outdoor tranquility of a coastal village with equal shine, articulated by its excellent actresses and the camera with lyrical naturalism that occasionally approaches dreamy incandescence. Everything we imagine as light is a moving study of the transforming power of friendship and brotherhood, in all its complexities and wealth.
